Wednesday 9 August … Villach

How about we just go to the ticket office, he said, ‘No way!! I love playing with these machines! … within a few minutes, the ticket machine had printed 2 x adult (1 senior), 2 x bicycles. … ticket office tut tut tut ...

Lots of lakes around here, today we are cycling around Worthersee, the largest lake in the Carinthia. It will be a 40km ride so we decided to train to the start. A little cloudy and cool today, raincoat and bathers packed just in case.

We are not alone. There are cyclists everywhere, lots of family groups … it is summer holidays. This area has been drenched in rain, coupled with the melt from snow on the mountains in the last few weeks. Areas of saturation and minor flooding is obvious in parts of the lake. They do build right up to the waters edge … what were they thinking?

A pretty ride through villages, big hotels, promoting tennis stays with many clay courts, natural bushland in parts and small climbs getting lovely views. Who owns these palatial houses I wonder? Some wealthy Austrians or Internationals?

Saving the best to last, we end in Veldon, anybody not cycling is here. Cafes and bars lap the edge of the lake and streets. Clothing shops, and it is busy.

We did get a small shower of rain, enough to put on a rain jacket but nothing major.

The kind tourist personnel have rung ahead to secure the next two nights accommodation. I ask, how far to the waterfall? ‘Sorry, you can’t go there at the moment, the rains have caused the area to be unsafe.

We are learning more about the flooding that has occurred in the last weeks, and parts of Slovenia is out of reach for cycling.
